Cops Have 'Person Of Interest' In Hit & Run Death Of Gary Piver

STONINGTON, CT —Police have identified a "person of interest" in connection with the fatal car versus bicyclist that claimed the life of Gary Piver on March 6, Deputy Chief Todd Olson said.

In an emailed statement, Olson said that in the ongoing investigation surrounding the death of Piver, the "person of interest has been identified after the suspect vehicle was located and seized."

Olson said police are "working closely with the New London States Attorney's Office as the investigation progresses." Olson pointed out that the "process can take time to ensure a successful resolution in the end."

Responding to Patch questions about the case, Olson said the released statement is all the information that will be provided now.

It was around 10:45 at night on March 6 when cops were called to a report of a motor vehicle versus cyclist accident in the area of 210 South Broad Street in Pawcatuck. Cops found Piver had been struck by a vehicle traveling west on South Broad Street. The vehicle, a dark gray Toyota SU, took off after hitting Piver, police said. Piver was taken to Westerly Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Well-known in the community, Piver was a decades-long Stonington schools custodian. He was the uncle of Joshua Piver, who was killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

In Gary Piver's obituary, the family noted that memorial donations in his name could be made to the Joshua Piver Scholarship Fund.
