Exploring Vintage Stonington, Mystic And Pawcatuck

At the corner of High and Main Streets in the borough stands a building that houses the real estate firm and several apartments, but in the late 1800s and early 1900s the building was a pharmacy.

The Dr. C.E. Brayton & Co., pharmacy located at 77 Main St., is the subject of this week’s vintage photograph.

Provided by the , the photograph taken sometime between 1890 and 1900 is titled “Dr. C.E. Brayton & Co., Pharmacists, corner of High and Main Streets, Stonington Borough.” The Mystic Seaport and the Connecticut Historical Society describe the shop as, “…housed in a large two and a half story wood structure with a gable and dormers. At street level, a small doorway is visible to the left, and a storefront with display windows and entrance to the right.”

According to the book, Leading Business Men of Westerly, Stonington, and vicinity, by William Hale Beckford, Dr. C.E. Brayton was both a chemist and a practicing physician who gave consultations in the shop as well. Brayton with fellow chemist Mr. C.T. Willard, P.H. ran the pharmacy, which took up the entire lower floor.
