Hoxie Gallery Art Opening

Wednesday,
June 5, Westerly Library’s Hoxie Gallery is pleased to hold an opening for our
June exhibit, which features work by artists Brian Stephens and Pola Esther.

Brian
Stephens is a painter, his work is very bold and beautiful. Pola Esther uses
photography as the main platform for her expression. Aside from their solo art
practices, these two artists have formed an unofficial duo called “Falo Blu”.
Romance is the subject, in the sense of exploring and exploiting its great
rhythm in the history of time. It is not only an affair between lovers but also
an affair with life.

The
artists say: “We are naturally emerged in figurative imagery but we are also

fascinated
with words as signs and signals and their placement on canvas. But our canvas, besides
traditional pieces of fabric or paper, could be a wall, bed sheet, article of clothing,
old postcard, or even a dance floor. We like to use living, sometimes urban

spaces
as display locations and reuse artifacts of life.”

Their
previous selected projects include: “Glow Motion” (2010), “Family Fun Fun” (2011),
and “Mixed Signals” (2012). Currently, “Falo Blu” is preparing a room
installation called “Love Letter” at the Bee and Thistle Inn in Old Lyme, CT. Their
studio is located in Old Lyme, CT. Pola and Brian would like to express
gratitude to organizations that donated clothing to make this project possible,
specifically, the Jonnycake Center of Westerly, the Salvation Army of New
London, CT, the Nearly New Shop in Old Lyme, CT, and the Estuary Thrift Shop in
Old Saybrook, CT.
