Mystic Aquarium Scientist Leads Effort to Designate Marine National Monument
If successful, the area would be the first Marine National Monument designated in the Atlantic Ocean.

MYSTIC, CT – A senior research scientist for the Mystic Aquarium is leading an effort to designate the first Marine National Monument in the Atlantic Ocean, The Day reported.
Peter Auster is leading an effort to get President Obama to designate 4,000-square-nautical-mile area of the ocean off Cape Cod as a Marine National Monument, according to The Day. The area is know as the New England Coral Canyons and Seamounts Area.
Auster has been studying the area for three decades, according to The Day. Designation of the area would prevent commercial extraction activities like mining, drilling and commercial fishing.
