NESS Sailing Center Grand Opening

New England Science and Sailing Foundation to unveil the NESS Sailing Center.

On Wednesday, June 15 at 5:30pm, New England Science & Sailing Foundation (NESS) will unveil their new Sailing Center at its Stonington, CT, location (72 Water Street, Stonington, CT). The Sailing Center previously served as one of NESS’s teaching facilities and at one point was the Garbo Lobster and Mohegan Tribe aqua-culture facility.

The former NESS wharf building underwent a significant renovation that included elevating the first floor to make room for basement fleet storage and making the building ADA compliant. “This project was crucial for many reasons, but mainly because the Sailing Center will now serve as a spacious and functional classroom area. It also now positions us to develop an Adaptive Sailing program for students with both physical and cognitive disabilities,” said NESS’s Sailing Program Director, Mark Zagol. The renovation was made possible by capital funds and donations.

NESS, now in its 12th year, provides students in grades K-16 with hands-on adventure programming that includes marine science, sailing, and water sports. NESS’s scholastic programs support teachers’ STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) curricula and focus on increasing students’ ability to overcome obstacles and develop a growth mindset. NESS also offers programs for youth, adults, and families throughout the year.
