Pawcatuck's Not-So-Secret Garden

By Ellyn Santiago

The Stonington Human Services Community Garden has blossomed to the point where there’s a waiting list for plots, Kristen King, human services program coordinator said as she took Patch on a tour Wednesday.

While enjoying the sun (finally) and exploring the raised bed plots ripe with flowers and vegetables from seedlings to some full grown plants, Sherman Crites of Stonington Borough, who gardens with his wife Jane, came by to check his plots and shared his thoughts about the importance of the garden with Patch.

“People have really come to take good care of their plots and so much food is provided. It’s just really great,” he said as he pointed out his Swiss chard.

The garden was created in 2010 and grew out of a partnership with the Community Harvest Network and TVCCA, with support from federal stimulus funding. Members from 34 Stonington households have enjoyed harvesting their own organically grown produce.

There is currently a wait list for plots, but for more information or to get on the list, contact Human Services at (860) 535-5015.
