PHOTOS: The Borough Begins To Clean Up After Hurricane Sandy

Some said it was the highest they have seen the water in Stonington Harbor rise. All agreed the village was lucky that the damage was not worse.

On Tuesday, as residents who had evacuated began to return to Stonington Village, as fishermen began to clean up the Town Dock, and as those who rode it out emerged, all were amazed by what happened - and by what did not.

Dog Watch Cafe owner Wendy Eck said it was a miracle that water did not come into the restaurant itself at Dodson Boatyard, since boats tied at the docks - and the docks themselves - were floating as high as the windows.

A lobsterman who did want to give his name said he has ridden out three hurricanes in 20 years at the Town Dock, and Sandy was the worst he had seen. All the boats made it through, but there was considerable damage to equipment on the docks.

Still others counted themselves lucky that they escaped with minor property damage.
