Suffield Hockey Co-op Remains Unbeaten with Shutout Victory

Wildcats win third straight by blanking Fermi-Enfield co-op, 3-0.

The old expression “better late than never” certainly applied to the Suffield-Granby-Windsor Locks co-op ice hockey team Wednesday afternoon.

The Wildcats scored in the final 20 seconds of each of the first two periods, paving the way to a 3-0 win over Fermi-Enfield-East Granby-Stafford at the Enfield Twin Rinks.

Colin MacDougald broke a scoreless deadlock with just over seven seconds to play in the first period, netting a power play goal off assists from Brendan Looney and Craig Montemerlo.

The second period played out in almost the exact same fashion, with neither team scoring until Dan Bahl beat Falcon goaltender Sam Roy, assisted by MacDougald, with just over 15 seconds remaining.

Even the Wildcats’ final goal came in the last minute of the third period, with Montemerlo connecting into an empty net with 53 ticks left. Austin Rupp assisted on the final tally.

Wildcat goaltender Dan DeGagne needed to stop just seven shots in posting the shutout. Roy had 31 saves for the Falcons.

Suffield, playing a “road” game in its home arena, won its third straight game to open the season, outscoring its opponents by a 16-2 margin. Meanwhile, the winless Falcons dropped their fourth in a row, and have been outscored 17-2.

The Wildcats play their first official home game of the season Saturday, hosting Glastonbury at 4:30 p.m. The Falcons also return to the ice Saturday, traveling to Veterans Memorial Rink in West Hartford to tangle with Hall-Southington at 1 p.m.
