A Vernon man was arrested on Wednesday night when a argument over recyclables turned violent, police said.

VERNON, CT — A Vernon man was arrested on Wednesday night when an argument over recyclables turned violent, police said.
Joel Phillips, 26, was charged with interfering with an emergrency call, third-degree assault and disorderly conduct after the fracas on Hillside Avenue, according to a report. He was held overnight on a $25,000 bond and was to be arraigned in court Thursday, according to a report.
According to a report, Phillips and his elderly grandfather were arguing over taking recyclables out of the house. Phillips is accused of throwing several of the recyclable items down a set of stairs toward his grandfather, nearly striking him.

His grandfather then attempted to call 911 and Phillips is accused of grabbing the man's hand, prying the phone loose and then breaking it into pieces, according to a report.
Phillips then left the house but was located at a nearby business and taken into custody, according to a report.
