VERNON, CT — The local fundraising effort to raise money for a new police dog in Vernon is off to a strong start.

In just two weeks more than $13,000 has been raised from more than three dozen citizens and businesses in Vernon. The goal is to raise a total of $30,000 by the end of the year, said resident Lisa Moody, who is leading the finding effort.

The effort began after the Vernon Police department lost Thor, a talented and decorated police dog, this fall, to medical issues. The VPD currently has a single dog on its roster.

One of the most endearing contributions, Moody said, came from the students, teachers and staff members at Maple Street School.

Moody said of the gesture, "Our hearts are touched by the incredible contribution of the Maple Street School community. "The students and staff embody the very spirit of caring and community and we could not be more grateful to them or proud of them."

"Maple Street School is a very special place. Our students, teachers and staff love helping our town in any way we can. As soon as we heard about the effort to raise money for a new police dog we knew we had to be a part of it," Maple Street School Principal Joshua Egan said. "I’m so proud of everyone at the school and as someone who has a family history of police service I am particularly grateful to all involved."

It is hoped that the goal of $30,000 may be met by the end of December, Moody said.
