2 Vernon Men Dead In Canoe Accident At Lake In Connecticut

VERNON, CT — Two Vernon men died after a canoe capsized on Bolton Lake Wednesday afternoon.

State officials Thursday night identified the two men as Keith Mosher, 52, of Vernon, and Marcus Sterling, 28, of Vernon.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, which has jurisdiction in the case.

Initial calls came in at 3:17 p.m., and rescuers rushed to Lower Bolton Lake. Vernon police officers pulled one person from the water and he was taken to Manchester Memorial Hospital. The man was pronounced dead a short time later, authorities said.

Emergency responders then recovered the second person, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, DEEP officials said.

Preliminary findings indicate that both men were in the canoe when it overturned. The vessel was initially reported to be a kayak by responders at the scene, but it was a canoe, DEEP officials said.

Vernon p and firefighters, Bolton firefighters, the Tolland County Dive Team, the regional Capitol Region Emergency Services Team all participated in the rescue efforts.

A report does not say whether the two were wearing personal flotation devices.

The DEEP is still investigating the case.
