Showdown For Final Vernon Town Council Seat Takes Place Tuesday

Polls are open at regular voting locations and schools are closed Tuesday for a special election in Vernon.

VERNON, CT — And so, it has come to this. On Tuesday, a special election will take place to determine the 12th and final Vernon Town Council seat.

The Vernon Registrars of Voters are reminding residents that the runoff will be a full-fledged election with polls open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the town's regular voting locations – Northeast School, Rockville High School, Vernon Center Middle School and Skinner Road School. Voters can can find their polling locations at the Secretary of the State's website.

School will not be in session Tuesday.

The election is being staged because a recount produced a tie vote between Republican Bill Campbell and Democrat Bill Dauphin.

The two candidates will be the only ones on the ballot.

Both officially accumulated 2,693 votes. The recount added six votes to Dauphin's total and added four to Campbell's, wiping out Campbell's original two-vote win on Election Day.

If Campbell wins, the Republicans will maintain their longtime majority, this time 7-5. If Dauphin wins, the council will have six Democrats and six Republicans. Republican Mayor Dan Champagne chairs the council.
