VERNON, CT — A Coventry teen is facing a pair of criminal charges after taking his friend's air rifle and firing shots at a passing car while traveling on a stretch of Interstate 84, according to a state police arrest warrant.

The driver of a car was on her way to pick up a child at a daycare, when she noticed a black sedan quickly shift from the right lane, across the center lane and into the left lane, according to a warrant.

The sedan then sped up and began to pass the woman's car when she noticed a teenage boy who was a passenger raise up what appeared to be a "toy gun" with a laser sight and aim it at her, according to a warrant. She then heard something hitting her vehicle, which caused her to swerve and nearly collide with a third vehicle, according to a warrant.

The woman followed the sedan and was able to get an image of the registration plate, according to a warrant.

State police racked down the driver, also a teen, and were told that his friend picked up his air rifle from the back seat and shot Orbeez gel pellets at the passing car three times.

When contacted by state police, the teen confessed to the incident.

He was subsequently charged with first-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree breach of peace.
