Update: Vernon Street Closed Briefly Due to Man With Gun

The man was disarmed and transported to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation, police said.

VERNON, CT — A Vernon street was closed briefly Friday evening because of an incident involving a man with a firearm, police said.

Shortly after 5 p.m., a section of road near the Windsor Avenue intersection with Union Street — near a small muffler shop across the street from Tire Town — was closed after an adult male was seen waving a handgun. Police intercepted him, disarmed him and secured the area, police spokesman Lt. William Meier said.

Police said they received a 911 call from people inside the home at 200 Union Street about the man, who was threatening to harm himself, Meier said. No one in the home was hurt, Meier said.

Once outside, the man assumed a threatening posture toward police, Meier said. He was taken to Rockville General Hospital for psychiatric evaluation after police talked to him for about 30 minutes, Meier said.

No identification of the suspect has yet been made. Meier said several firearms were taken from the home.

The incident happened about a half-mile down the road from the town green, where a tree lighting ceremony was about to commence. The road was closed for less than an hour, Meier said.

No charges had been filed as of 10 p.m. Friday, Meier said.
