Turning a nonprofit agency’s Board of Directors into a leadership team that can set and reach ambitious goals is a challenge for every organization. The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut and the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut have partnered to help lead local nonprofit boards into a future of action and results, with the June 6 conference, ‘Your Board Made Perfect: Improving Nonprofit Fundraising and Governance.’

During this full day workshop, your team, ideally consisting of your CEO, Development Director, and at least three board members, will have the opportunity to examine board governance and the board’s role in fundraising in a retreat format.

“Part of our obligation as a Chamber is to help our nonprofit members and others better navigate the complex course of leadership and governance,” said Tony Sheridan, president and CEO of the Chamber. “This conference will accomplish that, at a low cost to participants.”

Your team will develop a plan to improve board leadership over the next year. Board members will also learn effective and simple fundraising strategies. Because your organization will be represented by multiple board leaders, and not just the CEO or board chair, you will have created a change team by the end of the afternoon.

“Chuck Loring is one of the nation’s top experts on governance and fundraising.  Training the board leadership of our local organizations is often a challenge for our nonprofits but so critical to their success,” said Jennifer O’Brien, Program Director for the

Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut. “Chuck’s presentations in the area have been extremely popular and we are pleased to bring him back to Eastern Connecticut for a third visit.  His workshops have been the most requested professional development program that we have undertaken.”

Topics that will be discussed:

  • WHY the board must have a culture of relationship-building

  • HOW board members can be great fundraisers and never ask for money

  • HOW do trends in the nonprofit sector affect your organization?

  • IS your board size and structure appropriate for effective governance?

  • DO you have successful board recruitment, orientation, retention, and evaluation?

  • Chuck V. Loring, CFRE, senior partner of Loring, Sternberg, & Associates, is the conference facilitator. Loring, Sternberg, & Associates provides fundraising and governance consulting services to nonprofits. Loring is also a Senior Governance Associate for BoardSource in Washington, DC, offering expertise in board development and other governance issues to boards across the country.
