A nominee for Best Songwriter in New England, Kate Callahan comes to The Funky Monkey Café on December 5th at 8pm.

A songwriter with over a decade of touring experience, Callahan invites her audiences to sing and interact, delightfully blurring the line between performer and listener. She has studied vocal improvisation and Circlesongs with Bobby McFerrin and his master faculty. NPR’s Colin McEnroe likened Callahan’s concerts to a “multi-pronged celestial tuning fork.”

A native of Connecticut, Callahan’s music is widely appreciated in her home state. In 2013 she was named Best Singer-Songwriter at the CT Music Awards. The Greater Hartford Arts Council named Callahan “Featured Artist of the Year” in 2014, and commissioned an album called Dream Tree: A Retrospective.

Folk legend Noel Paul Stookey (Peter, Paul & Mary) mentored Callahan in 2007 and calls her music “Zen-like.” Callahan’s music is soulful and she’s unapologetically optimistic in concert. Her latest albumTwo Doors explores themes of spirituality, marriage, empowerment, free will, and creativity.

A survivor of traumatic brain injury, Callahan turned to music to help regain her sense of self, short-term memory, coordination, and balance. She’s been performing professionally ever since.

Callahan’s credits include sharing stages with Judy Collins, Noel Paul Stookey, John Gorka, Aztec Two-Step, Mustard’s Retreat, and the late Bill Morrissey. She has appeared as an emerging artist at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, Connecticut Folk Festival, New Haven Festival of Arts and Ideas, and was a finalist in the South Florida Folk Festival Songwriting Competition.
