Kingswood Oxford Varsity Pitcher Plays in National Tournament

Kingswood Oxford Varsity Baseball pitcher Holden White ‘16 traveled to the West Coast this month to play in a highly selective national tournament called the Area Code Baseball Games.

Based in Long Beach, CA, the tournament consisted of eight regional teams that played one another during the weeklong event. White played for the Yankees, which represented the Northeast region.

“The teams are made up of the best high school players in the country,” said Head Varsity Baseball Coach Steve Cannata. “Players have to be invited to try out by Major League scouts. The scouts then select the players from those tryouts.”

White, the son of Thomas and Katherine White of Wallingford, pitched two innings in the Yankees’ game against the White Sox, which the Yankees won 4-1. Overall, the Yankees won three games, lost one, and tied one.

Scouts from all 30 Major League teams and the Major League Scouting Bureau attended the tournament, along with college coaches from many of the top college baseball programs in the nation.
