West Hartford Asks Residents to Clear Traffic Sight Lines

Overgrown vegetation is obscuring visibility and can cause accidents, town says.

Overgrown bushes along the town’s streets have become a hazard for drivers in West Hartford and the town is asking residents for their help in curbing the problem.

According to a release from the town, overgrown shrubs are obscuring sight lines at intersections and on curves. The issue results in motor vehicle accidents in town every year.

In addition to being dangerous, the overgrown vegetation is also in violation of the town’s zoning ordinance, which states, “No hedge, bush, tree or other growth or any fence shall be erected, maintained or planted which obstructs a clear view of drivers of vehicles on a curve or street intersection and endangers the safety of those traveling upon such streets."

The town is asking residents to trim or remove vegetation that hangs over sidewalks, blocks the view at corners or hinders sight at intersections.

To determine if vegetation on their property needs to be trimmed, property owners are advised to drive up to the stop sign or intersection and see if they can see any oncoming traffic and pedestrians without having to roll their vehicle forward.
