The first arriving engine was hampered by an icy roadway and firefighters were forced to haul their equipment to the house up a steep driveway, a distance of approximately 800 feet. Initial attempts to control the fire with extinguishers were unsuccessful and crews were forced to back out while the first handline was being placed in service.

A quick knockdown of the fire was made and crews proceeded to check for extension into the rest of the house.
