Arrest Made, Aston Martin Recovered After Westport Carjacking: Police

A 16-year-old has been arrested, and a Berlin man was also charged where the vehicle was recovered.

WESTPORT, CT — A 16-year-old juvenile from Waterbury has been arrested in connection with Sunday's carjacking incident in Westport, and a 39-year-old Berlin man has also been arrested where the stolen Aston Martin was located.

Due to his age, the juvenile's identity was not disclosed, but he faces the following charges:

  • Home Invasion
  • Strangulation 1st Degree
  • Robbery by Carjacking
  • Burglary 1st Degree
  • Criminal Attempt to Commit Larceny of Motor Vehicle 1st Degree
  • Assault 3rd Degree

The teen was arrested following a search of his home on Tuesday, where police also found a handgun with an extended magazine.

"We are still investigating the case and anticipate additional arrests and additional suspects," Westport Police Lt. Eric Woods told Patch, adding that the handgun was seized, but that it is not necessarily associated with Sunday's crime. "There is no indication that a weapon was used or displayed [during the carjacking]."

Tuesday's search in Waterbury was conducted by Westport Police detectives, the Connecticut State Police Violent Crime Task Force, and members of the Waterbury Police Department, and the teen was additionally charged in connection with the recovering of a stolen BMW from Westport on Saturday.

The stolen BMW was used in the carjacking of the Aston Martin, according to police, and as a result, the teen was also charged with:

  • Larceny of Motor Vehicle 1st Degree
  • Illegal Taking of Payment Card

The violent carjacking shocked the community, led to Westport police and First Selectwoman Jen Tooker scheduling a community meeting on public safety at 7 p.m. Wednesday night in the Westport Town Hall Auditorium.

During Sunday's assault, two assailants beat a Bayberry Lane homeowner as he returned home, and stole the luxury convertible. The victim suffered minor injuries in the incident, but did not require medical attention.

"The second suspect being sought was one of the masked intruders," Woods said. "I do not have any information on the additional suspects at this time."

Westport detectives will seek an order to detain the juvenile, and if granted, he will be transported to Bridgeport Juvenile Detention Center.

On Monday, acting on information obtained by Westport Police detectives, members of the Bridgeport Auto Theft Task Force, of which Westport is a member, and members of Berlin Police Department raided the Berlin home of Derrick McGill, 39, and recovered the stolen Aston Martin. Authorities also recovered two stolen BMWs, one from Ridgefield, and a stolen Porsche out of Rhode Island. The second BMW, a 2021 530i, had been reported stolen in Westport over the weekend and was the BMW mentioned above in the carjacking.

Due to the stolen vehicles being found in his possession, McGill was arrested and charged by Bridgeport police with the following:

  • Larceny of Motor Vehicle 1st Degree (4 Counts)
  • Conspiracy to Commit Larceny of Motor Vehicle 1st (1 Count)
  • Payment Card Theft (1 Count)
  • Illegal Operation of a Chop Shop (1 Count)
  • Conspiracy to Commit Illegal Operation of a Chop Shop (1 Count)

He is being held in lieu of bail of $250,000, and may also face charges in the future from Westport police.

"By utilizing technology, inter-departmental cooperation, and good old-fashioned police work, the Detective Bureau in concert with Bridgeport Auto-theft Task Force was able to make rapid progress in this investigation which resulted in the arrest of one of the suspects less than 36 hours after the incident occurred," said Westport Police Chief Foti Koskinas.

Added Tooker, "As always, the professionalism, expertise and experience of our Westport Police Department, was on full display as they worked diligently and rapidly to solve this case. I am also grateful for the assistance from the other State and municipal agencies and the Task Force who helped bring it to a swift conclusion. Together with our public safety officials, we will continue the conversations and daily practices to deter further incidents, and to make Westport a community that remains safe and welcoming for all."

Westport Police want to thank the CT State Police Violent Crime Task Force, Bridgeport Auto Theft Task Force, Berlin Police Department and Waterbury Police Department for their assistance with the investigation.

Westport Police detectives continue to work with partner agencies in developing leads to identify additional suspects involved in this incident.
