UPDATE: 83-Year-Old Dies in Fatal 3-Vehicle Westport Crash

The crash occurred Friday morning at about 10 a.m. and resulted in the temporary closure of the Post Road East.

Updated at 3:38 p.m. on Friday, May 13, 2016: Westport resident Harry Engel, 83, was killed in the three-vehicle crash Friday morning that shut down a portion of the Post Road East, according to police.

The crash occurred at about 10 a.m. near Crescent Road. Engel was the driver of one of the vehicles: he suffered serious injuries and was transported to Norwalk Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"A preliminary investigation into the crash found that a westbound vehicle on the Post Road crossed into the eastbound lane, creating a head on collision with two vehicles," wrote Westport Police Lt. David Farrell in a statement. "The operators of the eastbound vehicles were not injured in the crash and were present at the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Westport Police Department Accident Investigation Unit."

Police have not filed charges at this time, added Farrell.

Post Road East from Compo Road to Hillspoint Road will be closed for an extended period of time today due to a serious motor vehicle accident. Please use alternate routes if traveling in Westport today. We will advise when the road is open.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. One person was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

Original story: WESTPORT, CT - A motor vehicle accident Friday morning has temporarily shut down a portion of the Post Road East in Westport, according to police.

The road was closed at about 10:45 a.m. between Compo and Hillspoint Road.

Whether there were injuries in connection with the crash was not disclosed. Additionally, police did not say when they expected to reopen the road.
