Westport Bans Single-Use Plastic Straws, Styrofoam Food Packages
Westport is again at the forefront of environmental preservation efforts.
WESTPORT, CT — Westport will ban the use of single-use plastic and Styrofoam containers and straws for foods before the end of the year, following a unanimous decision by the Representative Town Meeting Tuesday, writes the Westport News.
The move again places Westport at the forefront of environmental preservation efforts, much like its ban on plastic bags did a decade ago.
"Single use plastics, whether made of recyclable material or not, and expanded polystyrene pose a threat to Westport's aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems," the ordinance states. "By prohibiting these items, Westport seeks to protect the environment, eliminate a major source of waste and protect the public health, safety and welfare of Westport and its citizens."
