Westport Parents Want New Long Lots School Without Delay: Report

Construction of the new school on Hyde Lane has been hotly debated in town for months.

WESTPORT, CT — The construction of a new Long Lots School needs to begin without further delays, several Westport parents told the Board of Education Thursday, the Westport Journal reported.

Building a new Long Lots School has been hotly debated in town for months, with some residents concerned that the construction would require moving the long-standing Community Gardens away from the Hyde Lane site.

On Monday, the Planning and Zoning Commission is scheduled to review a resubmitted 8-24 application for the new elementary school, which will be on the same lot where the current Long Lots School sits.

The new plan reportedly calls for the Community Gardens to remain at the site, but in a different location.

In a note to parents Friday, Schools Superintendent Thomas Scarice said he will continue to advocate for the school project.

"I want to thank the LLS Community for the support in advocating for a much needed new construction of Long Lots School," Scarice wrote. "Last night, the Long Lots School Building Committee (LLSBC) provided a brief update to the Board of Education and many parents and faculty members attended.

"Perhaps most promising is the news that Jennifer Tooker, our First Selectwoman, has modified the site plan request (i.e. '8-24' application) to the Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z). This application request will be considered by the P&Z at their Monday evening virtual meeting on January 22 at 7PM."
