Wethersfield Police Warn Of New Phishing Scam
Wethersfield police alert residents to a phishing scam using fake Outlook meeting invites with QR codes.
WETHERSFIELD, CT — The Wethersfield Police Department is warning residents about a phishing scam that uses fraudulent Microsoft Outlook meeting invitations to steal login credentials.
In the department's regular “Scam of the Week” alert, which was issued Monday, police said victims may see an unexpected calendar invite titled “Final Notice: Payroll Acknowledgement Required,” designed to create a sense of urgency.
The invitation often includes a PDF attachment containing a QR code and instructions to scan it for more information.

According to police, the invitation is sent by cybercriminals.
Scanning the QR code may direct users to what appears to be a Microsoft 365 login page. However, the page is fraudulent and intended to capture usernames and passwords.

Officials cautioned that entering credentials on the fake site allows attackers to access victims’ accounts.
Police advised residents to avoid interacting with suspicious calendar invites, including clicking links or opening attachments. They also recommended treating unexpected or alarming meeting requests the same way as suspicious emails and following workplace or organizational reporting protocols.
Authorities noted that scammers frequently use urgent language such as “Final Notice” to pressure users into acting quickly without verifying legitimacy.
Residents are encouraged to pause and evaluate unexpected digital communications before taking action.
