REDESIGN FACIAL ABNORMALITIES

Yale, New Haven, February 9, 2017 – The success of the Star Wars franchise, with the new movie leading at the box office this holiday season, shows how enthusiastic everyone is for high technology action. And Star Wars technology is not just limited to movie gimmicks. Many surgeries are rapidly improving and becoming more precise with the addition of 3D imagery to assist with complex operations, particularly in reconstructive and plastic surgery. And since cleft palates are the most ###a>commonThese surgeries are usually performed And since these surgeries are usually performed when children are between the ages of 2 and 8 months-old, so the high-resolution imagerysuperior level of details this technology offers greatly improves surgery outcomes.

3D imagery has been around for years, but was traditionally used in the automotive and architecture field. Applying this application to reconstructive work ###a>is a relatively recent phenomenon done by a handful of specialists. 3D imagery starts with radiology, which creates three-dimensional cat scans. This picture allows for targeted research, improving surgery resultoutcomes, while encouraging more creativity when performing operations. 3D offers a better understanding of soft tissue and skeletal structural interaction, and this knowledge plays It allows for overlapping images to be taken from different angles, without exposing the sensitive eye area to radiation.

Dr. Derek Steinbacher, a plastic surgeon and ca plastic surgeon and Chief of Maxillofacial and Orthognathic Surgery at Yale, now uses 3D imagery, whenever possible, for his surgeries. He also works with other specialists, particularly orthodontists, when doing cleft palate and craniofacial reconstructions. In fact large medical facilities, such as Yale, are the only surgery centers that have space for surgeons to work with other specialists, which increases the patient demand for Dr. Steinbacher’s work.

Dr. Steinbacher prefers to partner with orthodontists who are trained in cleft palate and craniofacial reconstructionthis subspecialty since they have a better understanding of the complexity of the work so can deliver superior results. Dr. Steven Giannoutsos (aka “Dr. G”), of Georgetown and Norwalk Orthodontics, is one of the few orthodontists with this advanced training. Dr. G received his training at the NYU Langone Center where he also works part-time as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Steinbacher says, “Dr. G’s background and training contributes greatly to the successful outcomes we’ve experienced with the patients we have managed as a team. In addition, his insights and detailed precision help tremendously when working with 3D imagery. I am very appreciative of his expertise and efforts. “

Dr. Steinbacher and Dr. G. recently worked on a local patient, David. Dr. Steinbacher began with correcting his dentofacial deformity. Dr. Steinbacher then performed genioplasty (jaw surgery) on this pateint with Dr. G managing the orthodontic issues. Dr. G’s expertise was required since repositioning of the jaw and bone segments holding the teeth require specialized orthodontic treatment.

The surgery improved chewing (occlusal function) optimized David’s facial balance, and greatly enhanced his overall appearance. Rhinoplasty was completed a few weeks after the surgery, further improving David’s looks as well as air flow.
