Author Talk & Discussion: Jason Coker - James in Postcolonial Perspective: The Letter as Nativist Discourse

Local pastor discusses The Letter of James at Wilton Library, December 15, 7 pm

The Rev. Dr. Jason Coker, the pastor at Wilton Baptist Church, discusses his latest book, James in Postcolonial Perspective: The Letter as Nativist Discourse at Wilton Library on Tuesday, December 15, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The book focuses on the role the Roman Empire had in shaping the development of early Judaism and Christianity. By understanding the “Letter of James,” a book in the New Testament, as a Jewish document negotiating Jewish identity, Coker argues that it both confronts Roman imperialism as well as other ways of Jewish identity negotiation—particularly the way Paul negotiates identity. This book has clear ramifications for modern Jewish-Christian relations. Additionally there will be a panel of other clergy in town responding to Rev. Coker’s book. This interfaith dialogue will hopefully be educational as well as inspiring. There is no charge. Registration is recommended. Q&A will follow the talk. Wilton Library, 137 Old Ridgefield Road, Wilton; www.wiltonlibrary.org; (203) 762-3950.
