3. Is your child bored with school math?

Nancy Miller, founder of Boundless, believes that all children should be challenged to learn at their highest ability. “We continually hear from parents that their children are feeling uninspired with traditional math in the school day.” Boundless employs the nationally recognized IMACS program to teach mathematics to talented students. This curriculum was crafted by a team of Johns Hopkins mathematicians to introduce children to a wide and challenging array of math topics. “Bright children can learn advanced concepts at an early age; long before they might be able to complete an algorithm they can demonstrate understanding of a high-level concept”, says Miller.

The IMACS curriculum asks students to learn and apply these concepts in game-based, challenging scenarios so that children learn a huge amount while having fun.” For example, first grade students are introduced to the use of negative numbers and multiples. Second graders learn to use both positive and negative decimals to the hundredth place. But the real focus of the program, especially for the youngest students, is training children to become problem solvers. “Knowing how to examine a problem, determine where to start, and then apply logic to reach a conclusion is a skill that can be developed early. It is similar to exercising a muscle. By practicing the use of logical problem solving children develop sophisticated skills that will be useful throughout life; regardless of the career path they choose.”

Boundless enrichment classes are offered through the Wilton Parks and Recreation Department. Openings are available now for new students for the Fall quarter. Classes begin the week of September 9. Ms. Miller wants all parents of new students to call her before enrolling. “It is important to explore parent goals and student abilities so we can place a child in the optimal challenge level.”

Special placement classes will be held for students in grades 2 and 3 on September 10 and 11. Reservations are required.
