Juvenile Trespasser At Wilton HS Not There To Commit Crimes: Police

The alleged trespasser was referred to Juvenile Court for a delinquent act on Thursday, according to police.

WILTON, CT — There was no indication that a juvenile who entered Wilton High School without permission on Tuesday had any intention to commit further crimes beyond trespassing, according to a statement released by police on Friday.

Social media posts Tuesday painted a different picture, and that was accomplished using screenshots that were nearly two years old, Wilton Police Lt. Anna Tornello said. The objects depicted were seized during the initial investigation and destroyed.

Wilton Schools Superintendent Kevin Smith said, "there was no report of an imminent threat and no report of a weapon," at the time. His remarks came during a special Board of Education meeting held Thursday night regarding the incident.

"We consider any unauthorized visitor to be a cause for concern, and we follow our protocols accordingly," Smith said.

Police were notified at 10:28 Tuesday morning that a juvenile not enrolled at Wilton High School had entered the building, and school staff were actively attempting to locate the teen. School Resource Officers responded to the building at 10:33 a.m., according to the police report.

The SROs learned that the juvenile non-student was let into the building by a WHS student, and began to assist staff in searching for both.

At 10:43 a.m. a WPD patrol officer located and detained the non-student in the area of Allen’s Field without incident, according to police. The detained juvenile non-student’s parent, who was already on scene, was escorted to Allen’s Field by School Resource Officers. At 11:12 a.m. the juvenile non- student was released to the custody of their parent.

After further investigation, and "with sufficient probable cause established," police say the juvenile non-student was referred to Juvenile Court for a delinquent act on Thursday.

During the BOE meeting Thursday night, Chair Ruth Deluca called the security breach "alarming and scary."

"Please know that the fears and concerns stemming from Tuesday are recognized, understood, and shared, and are actively being addressed," DeLuca said.
