We get a lot of questions about the Positive Discipline Parenting Classes, and thought we’d share some of them.
Q: My kids aren’t bad, so I don’t need a parenting class, do I?
A: Even the “best” children can push our buttons. The classes help us understand why children behave the way they do, and we learn different tools to help our children grow and learn. We learn how to build a calmer house, where cooperation is strong. We learn how to calm down, and ways to express feelings that are more likely to be heard. We learn how to empower our children, and encourage them to be the best that they can be.

Q: I’m feel pretty good about how I parent. Why would I need a parenting class?
A: Parenting classes help us build better relationships with our children, and everyone else in our lives. We learn new skills and strategies for helping our children become responsible, resilient, self-reliant and confident people. We develop a better understanding of why, at times, our children misbehave, and learn how to turn these moments into opportunities to learn. While there never will be a “perfect” child or parent, we can all use to grow and improve!

Q: Is there a class for parents of teens? For preschoolers?
A: The Positive Discipline philosophy is the same regardless of the age of your child(ren). We have had everyone from expectant first-time parents to those with college-aged children in the same class. We talk about how some of the tools and strategies would be applied differently to a preschooler or a teenager. We all learn and grow from one another’s experiences, and currently have mixed aged classes.
Q: Does my spouse need to take the class with me?
A: While ideally both parents would take the Positive Discipline parenting class, it is not always feasible. Often, the parent taking the class will begin making changes, and his/her spouse will begin reading the Positive Discipline book or tool cards. Sometimes, a spouse will not want to change their parenting style. The child(ren) will still benefit from the new tools and strategies being used by one of the parents.
Q: I cannot afford the full cost of the class. Are there scholarships?
A: Yes, there are scholarships available. You can get the application by emailing scholarship@positivedisciplinect.org.
