Viral Meningitis Found at Wilton High School

Two students have come down with viral meningitis at the high school.

Parents of Wilton High School students received a letter informing them of viral meningitis at the high school, News 12 reports.

A notice sent by the Wilton High School nursing staff stated that in the past week, two students have come down with the infection. The letter advised parents to go to the doctor if their child shows symptoms of a fever, headache, stiff neck, red rash or nausea.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, viral meningitis is less severe than bacterial meningitis and usually resolves without specific treatment. It can be severe or fatal depending on the virus that is causing the infection, the person’s age, or whether a person has a weak immune system.

Viral meningitis is caused by enteroviruses, however, only a small number of people with enterovirus infections develop meningitis.

Sudden onset of fever, headache, and stiff neck often accompanied by other symptoms, such as

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Photophobia (sensitivity to light)
  • Altered mental status.

In some cases viral meningitis can be severe or fatal. Because of this, it is important to see a healthcare provider right away if you think you or your child might have meningitis.
