Windsor Police Union Votes No Confidence In Chief

The Windsor Police Department Employees Association voted overwhelmingly against the department's chief.

WINDSOR, CT - Police Chief Donald Melanson lost a no-confidence vote in his leadership by the Windsor Police Department Employees Association, according to the Hartford Courant. Thirty-eight of the union's 44 members voted against the police chief.

The town council will now review complaints submitted by the union regarding Melanson's leadership.

The concerns about Melanson include issues with credibility, competence and a threatening style of leadership, the Courant reported.

The dashcam video was of Officer Michael Tustin, who responded to a crash involving former Board of Education president Cristina Santos. Santos has accused Tustin of acting based on political bias in his investigation of the crash.

An independent review board cleared Melanson of wrongdoing. However, the review board did state that Melanson should have retained the dashcam tape once the crash victim filed a complaint about the officer involved and recommended the department update its policies on retaining videos.
