 an exploration of the cultural complexities of tourism and a guide to 
ensuring your visits to other places benefit all involved, with Melissa 
A. Stevens, principal at CultureSnap Consulting and adjunct professor of
 cultural anthropology at the University of Delaware.&nbsp;
Mark Twain once famously remarked that “travel is fatal to prejudice,
 bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” Indeed, it can open our minds to new 
ideas and possibilities, positively contribute to local communities, and
 help us establish lasting relationships with people across the world.&nbsp;
At the same time, however, our travels can be harmful to the people 
and places we visit and to our world as a whole. We can end up 
exploiting vulnerable populations, worsening global and local 
inequalities, accelerating climate change, and forever altering the 
places and cultures that we visit.&nbsp;
How are responsible tourists supposed to navigate these contradictions without ruining their vacation?&nbsp;
Explore the cultural complexities of what it means to travel, and 
find ways to ensure your conscience rests easy after full travel days, 
with the help of cultural anthropologist Melissa Stevens.&nbsp;
She’ll start by discussing how her own field has not always been a 
positive force in other parts of the world, and historically has 
committed some of the same sins as the tourism marketing industry when 
it comes to shaping Western perceptions of Non-Western cultures. Popular
 anthropologists such as Margaret Mead and Napoleon Chagnon contributed 
to the “exotification” and exploitation of indigenous peoples and local 
communities in ways that cast a shadow on their work.&nbsp;
In confronting the ethical implications of its early history, 
anthropology developed a perspective known as “cultural relativism,” 
which called upon anthropologists to build awareness of their own 
cultural assumptions as a means to engage more ethically and responsibly
 with the people and places they visited. Anyone, including tourists, 
can learn to have a culturally relativist mindset in their travels.&nbsp;
Dr. Stevens will discuss how anthropologists use cultural relativism 
to gain a deeper understanding of people and places. She’ll also talk 
about how anthropologists look at tourism through a cultural lens, 
diving into the politics of representation, of performance, and of 
authenticity, and also examining gendered experiences of tourism. We'll 
take a tour through the history of travel, from early pilgrims to 
digital nomads, and we’ll explore different types of tourism, including 
cultural tourism, ecotourism, sex and romance tourism, dark tourism, 
backpacking, and “voluntourism.”
We’ll consider the environmental and cultural impacts of tourism on 
tourist destinations. Drawing from her experiences conducting 
ethnographic research on cultural and sustainable tourism in Tanzania 
and Vietnam, Dr. Stevens will share immersive stories about what she 
learned in researching how tourism was perceived and experienced by the 
people who live with it.&nbsp;

The "Watercolor For All levels" class will offer students from all levels the chance to discover the fresh watercolor medium. The class is taught by distinguished artist / educator, Vian Borchert, who has been teaching art classes to adults in the DC area for over two decades.

Course Description:
In this 6 week Watercolor painting course, designed for all levels, students will explore traditional watercolor and experimental watercolor techniques. Color theory and composition are emphasized through images based on varying subject matters such as landscape and still-life and studies of master artists’ artwork. Students are welcome to work from the images the instructor provides or bring their own images to work from.Students will be guided in creating a pleasing work of art.
* Borchert who has been teaching for decades art classes in the DMV area is a distinguished artist whose career spans over 20 years of exhibiting locally and internationally in&nbsp;prestigious venues.  on the recent history of election-related terrorism and the potential 
for violence before, during, and after the midterms, with Jacob Ware, 
adjunct professor at Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of 
Foreign Service and scholar of domestic and international terrorism.&nbsp;
The United States has been plagued by election violence over the past
 several years, with recent incidents including the January 6, 2021, 
attack on the Capitol and the attempted 2024 assassination of Donald 
Trump during an open-air campaign rally.&nbsp;
But the historical record indicates that such election violence is 
not an aberration. American elections have been undermined by terrorism 
and political violence since the nation’s founding. We should therefore 
not be surprised if violence again mars the upcoming 2026 midterms.
Join terrorism expert Jacob Ware, coauthor of God, Guns, and Sedition: Far-Right Terrorism in America, for an in-depth look at past and potential election-related violence.
He’ll examine the violence of election cycles in the Trump era, 
including assassination attempts during candidate campaigning, voter 
intimidation on Election Day, and attempts to forcefully affect 
vote-counting in the days and weeks after the vote itself.
He’ll cover the spectrum of domestic and homegrown terrorist actors, 
including longstanding Salafi-jihadist adversaries as well as far-right 
extremists and far-left extremists, and draw on various data sources to 
assess which actors will pose the gravest threat of violence around the 
2026 midterms.
His talk will conclude with a set of practical recommendations that 
both government and citizens can follow to try to ensure peace during

 on a rival superpower’s emergence as a key player in Latin America and 
the Caribbean, with Leland Lazarus, former diplomat in China and the 
Caribbean, former researcher and instructor on U.S.-China relations at 
Florida International University, and author of Dragon in the Americas: China’s Power, Presence, and Regional Influence. 
Across Latin America and the Caribbean, China is helping build ports,
 digital networks, energy projects, space facilities, and supply chains 
for the critical minerals that power life. Along with creating 
opportunities, these investments are shifting influence and altering 
diplomatic relationships, security dynamics, and the balance of power in
 the United States’ neighborhood.
Learn about the implications of China’s growing investment and 
influence in the Western Hemisphere at a talk that will go beyond the 
headlines and simplistic narratives of China as either a predatory 
threat or a benevolent development partner.
The speaker, Leland Lazarus, is a former special assistant to two 
commanders of U.S. Southern Command who has spent more than a decade 
researching China’s engagement with the Western Hemisphere.
In accessible, nonpartisan terms he’ll seek to answer two fundamental
 questions: Is China’s growing role in the Americas primarily an 
economic opportunity, a strategic challenge, or both? And what should 
the United States do to remain a trusted, competitive partner without 
forcing the region to choose sides?
He’ll discuss how China’s regional presence affects trade, technology, migration, crime, and U.S. national security.&nbsp;
Drawing on examples from across the hemisphere, he will explain why 
ports and undersea cables matter, how Beijing competes with Taiwan for 
diplomatic recognition, where Chinese companies and criminal networks 
intersect, and how Latin American and Caribbean countries are navigating
 relationships with both the U.S. and China.
You’ll emerge from the talk with a clearer, more nuanced 
understanding of a transformation already underway just beyond our

Arlington, VA– More than 50 artists will open their studios to the public the weekend of September 26 and 27, organizers announced.
his year will mark the ninth <a href="https://arlingtonartstudiotour.org/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Arlington Visual Art Studio Tour</a>, an opportunity for people to meet local artists and learn about their processes. Visitors can view the art of over 50 creative individuals who represent a wide range of styles and media. In addition to painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture, artists in the Arlington area are known for printmaking, photography, papercutting, letterpress, and jewelry. While there will be opportunities for visitors to purchase art, the Tour is foremost a community-building event that encourages visitors to discover and appreciate the artists in their neighborhood. The Arlington Visual Art Studio Tour depends on the efforts of independent artists, volunteers, and Arlington visual arts organizations. The 2026 Tour is made possible through the generosity of our sponsors, which include Fred Schnider Investment Group, Gerald &amp; Katherine Freshley, and Palette 22. 
The Tour will publish a guide and map with the names, locations and opening hours of participating artists. Printed copies will be available at community centers, arts venues, and libraries by early September.  findings, debates and trends in the use of psychedelic substances to 
treat trauma and other conditions, with Whitney Marris, instructor at 
the University at Buffalo’s School of Social Work, certified 
psychedelic-assisted therapy facilitator, and consultant to clinical 
trials.
Psychedelics are rapidly moving from the margins into the mainstream,
 and questions abound as the sociocultural and legal landscapes 
surrounding them shift. President Trump’s recent executive order 
expanding access to psychedelic drugs for certain conditions and 
accelerating research on them has both heightened interest and added to 
confusion.
Learn more about the so-called “Psychedelic Renaissance,” and get 
help separating the hope from the hype surrounding it, with Whitney 
Marris, a leading trainer and facilitator of psychedelic therapy who has
 used it to treat trauma survivors, military veterans, and people with 
cancer.
She’ll present foundational information on what we know about how 
psychedelics work. You’ll learn how psychedelic-assisted therapy differs
 from “trip sitting” and about what we know about the effects of 
“microdosing” versus “macrodosing.” We’ll examine what has been 
demonstrated to be helpful versus harmful before, during, and after a 
dosing session intended to support significant, sustainable change.
Marris also will discuss the historical and cultural context of the 
use of psychedelic medicines for healing, and she’ll describe the 
ethical challenges that arise as such practices move from counterculture
 to clinic. We’ll look at emerging and evolving findings in the field, 
as well as at the roles being played by various financial interests and 
ideologies in determining the direction of psychedelic-assisted therapy 
and research on its outcomes.
Attendees will gain an awareness of the need for new professional 
standards and regulatory guardrails related to such work, and they’ll 
leave knowing key questions to ask potential providers of
