3 Dead After Car Plunges Into Anacostia River: Authorities

Witnesses reported seeing a car drive into the water under the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge in Washington, D.C., authorities said.

WASHINGTON, DC — Three people are dead after a vehicle went into the Anacostia River under the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge on Thursday night, according to authorities.

DC Fire and EMS said witnesses reported seeing a car drive into the river below the South Capitol Street bridge shortly before 10:30 p.m. When first responders arrived, authorities said they found tire tracks leading into the water.

Authorities launched search-and-rescue efforts using fireboats and personnel from the U.S. Coast Guard, the United States Park Police and the Metropolitan Police Department.

During their search, divers located a car beneath the water and a body inside the vehicle, according to fire officials. Two more bodies were recovered in the water outside the car, authorities said.

It's unclear how the car ended up in the water.

Authorities have also not identified the victims.
