4th Man Pleads Guilty To Fatal Shooting Of Davon McNeal, 11 At 4th Of July Cookout In DC

A fourth suspect pleaded guilty Monday in the fatal shooting of 11-year-old Davon McNeal at a July 4th cookout in 2020.

WASHINGTON, DC — Carlo General, 21, of Washington, D.C. pleaded guilty on Monday to the charge of voluntary manslaughter while armed in connection with the July 4, 2020 fatal shooting of 11-year-old Davon McNeal in Southwest D.C.

General, who is the fourth suspect to plead guilty in connection with McNeal's death, entered his plea in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. He made the plea based on sentencing guidelines of 13 t0 16 years in prison. The sentence is contingent on the court agreeing to the plea deal. General will appear before Judge Rainey R. Brandt on June 3 for his sentencing hearing.'

Earlier in the evening on July 4, 2020, Davon attended a July 4th cookout outside the Douglass Garden Apartment Complex in Southwest Washington, D.C.

Surveillance footage taken around 9:15 p.m, showed General, who was armed with a firearm, and his three co-defendants — Daryle Bond, 20; Marcel Gordon, 26; and Christen Wingfield, 24 — at the apartment complex, according to court documents. McNeal is seen running toward a basement apartment. General fires his weapon and McNeal then falls to the ground, according to authorities.

Six seconds later, the video shows Gordon, running behind General, and firing a weapon in the same direction. Bond and Winfield are also armed, according to police. After gathering together, the group runs toward a nearby playground with their guns drawn. As they run away, Bond, General and Gordon fire their weapons, according to court documents.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner performed an autopsy and determined that McNeal had died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Police arrested Bond, Wingfield and General in July 2020, with Gordon being arrested the following September. All four have been in custody since their arrests.

Bond, Gordon and Wingfield all pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter while armed in February. Based on each of their plea deals, Bond faces 7 1/2-9 1/2 years in prison, Gordon up to 10 years behind bars, and a 9 1/2 year sentence for Wingfield. They will also be sentenced on June 3.
