8 New Coronavirus Deaths In DC; District Prepares To Reopen
D.C. Health Department confirmed eight new coronavirus deaths in the District, as the city prepares for a phased reopening on Friday.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — As the District prepares for a phased reopening on Friday, the D.C. Department of Health confirmed eight new deaths Thursday due to COVID-19, the illness associated with the new coronavirus. The total number of coronavirus deaths in the District stands at 453.
The new deaths were described as:
- 37-year-old male
- 48-year-old female
- 61-year-old male
- 66-year-old female
- 83-year-old male
- 91-year-old male
- 93-year-old male
- 96-year-old male
D.C. Health also confirmed 85 new positive COVID-19 cases. The total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the District stands at 8,492.

D.C. Health has confirmed 43,514 overall patients and 36,284 District residents have been tested for the coronavirus and 1,082 have been cleared from isolation. Contact tracing investigations are focused positive cases tied to health care workers and first responders, senior care facilities, correctional and detention centers, child care facilities and facilities serving homeless individuals.
On Wednesday, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser signed an executive order for the District to enter a phased reopening Friday with some restrictions.

D.C. Health also reported a 15-day decrease in community spread of the coronavirus Thursday. On Wednesday, the District reached the 14-day mark, which is one of the key metrics for the District to continue moving forward with its reopening.

Globally, more than 5.7 million people have been infected by COVID-19, and over 356,000 people have died, Johns Hopkins University reported Wednesday morning. In the United States, more than 1.6 million people have been infected and over 100,000 people have died from COVID-19.
