Tis the season in Washington, DC and beyond for Christmas light displays, shopping, shows, and maybe snow. The best picks for Christmas fun.

It's Christmas in Washington, DC and beyond communities all across the DMV people are ushering in the season with tree lighting ceremonies, shopping, Christmas displays, and dressing for the cold weather. The US Capitol Christmas Tree has been an American tradition since 1964. The first tree was a live 24-foot Douglas fir planted on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

The Capitol Christmas Tree should not to be confused with the National Christmas Tree, which is planted near the White House and lighted every year by the president and first lady. The Speaker of the House officially lights the Capitol Christmas Tree. The lighting takes place on December 4th at 5 pm on the West Lawn of the Capitol.

If you want to get out of the city, Emmy Award Winning Journalists and Photographer, Victoria Gaither, says her two favorite picks are in Berlin, Maryland. Owner Brittany Mariner, of Windmill Creek Vineyard and Winery, held a contest to decorate the farmhouse and winery this year. The rooms resemble Christmas from the past and a winter wonderland. Victoria says, "Brittany has done an amazing job, every season, she offers something. Plus, I love the wine". Only a few minutes away is The Snowball Stand own by Danielle Pohland who serves up the best snowballs on the Eastern Shore. You can find Christmas trees, one of a kind gifts, hot chocolate, and Santa Claus this time of year.

Washington, DC locals still say the Willard InterContinetal has the best Christmas decorations in the city. The lobby is dressed up with elaborate ornaments, flowers, and Christmas trees. It's worth going for a visit to see and have a drink at the bar. They also offer a high tea that starts at 1 pm. If it's boats you like then check out Light up the Wharf, The Wharf is transformed into a water winter wonderland with thousands of twinkling lights.

Don't forget shopping in Georgtown, Pentagon City, and Tysons Corner. The White House Historical Society has a great offering of books by the likes of Former White House Executive Pasty Chef Roland Mesnier. His eggnog recipe is to die for and makes for great conversation at the holiday party. Another great place according to Gaither is just an hour and half from Washington, DC is St. Michaels, Maryland. Owner and Chef, Eric Rosen, of St. Michaels Steak and Crab House makes the best crab cakes and you'll dine in a causal atmosphere that feels like home during the holidays.
