DC Positive Coronavirus Cases Tops 5,100; Total Deaths 258

D.C. Health reported seven new deaths due to the new coronavirus, bringing the total numbers of District deaths to 258.

WASHINGTON, DC — The D.C. Health Department confirmed seven new deaths Monday due to COVID-19, the illness associated with the new coronavirus, bringing the total number of coronavirus deaths in the District to 258. D.C. Health also confirmed 154 new positive COVID-19 cases, bringing the overall total to 5,170.

The new deaths in the District are described as:

  • 64-year-old female
  • 67-year-old female
  • 69-year-old male
  • 69-year-old male
  • 71-year-old male
  • 81-year-old male
  • 101-year-old male

D.C. Health has confirmed 23,795 District residents have been tested for the coronavirus and 666 have recovered. Contact tracing investigations are focused positive cases tied to health care workers and first responders, senior care facilities, correctional and detention centers, childcare facilities and facilities serving homeless individuals.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser extended the District's public health emergency, including the stay-at-home order and closure of non-essential businesses, through May 15. Residents are. The order also requires face masks for hotel workers, guests and visitors; drivers and passengers of taxis, rider shares, and private transportation; and workers and customers of food sellers. Workers and customers of public transit are encouraged to wear face masks.

Globally, more than 3.5 million people have been infected by COVID-19, and over 248,000 people have died, Johns Hopkins University reported Monday morning. In the U.S., more than 1.1 million people have been infected and over 68,000 people have died from COVID-19.
