Special Police Officer Shoots Himself, Suspect: DC Police

A special police officer shot himself and a suspect in Southeast D.C. on Monday night, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

WASHINGTON, DC — A special police officer shot himself and a suspect in Southeast D.C. Monday night, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

After the shooting on Monday, Tyshawn Wilson, 30, of Southeast D.C. was arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon (motor vehicle), unauthorized use of a vehicle, unlawful entry and two counts of fugitive from justice.

At about 8:30 p.m. Monday, Wilson was spotted by uniformed special police officers in the 800 block of Southern Avenue SE, according to the MPD. Wilson was in a vehicle and was barred from the listed location, the police said.

The special police officers tried to remove Wilson from the vehicle. But Wilson started driving the vehicle forward and hit one of the special police officers, D.C. police said.

A second special police officer then fired his gun, striking his own hand as well as Wilson. Both Wilson and the special police officer were taken to local hospitals for treatment of injuries, the police said.

The special police officers are private law enforcement authorized by the D.C. government to provide police, security, and protective services within the District of Columbia.

Officers with the MPD who responded to the shooting activated their body-worn cameras, and the footage is under review as part of the department’s investigation into the incident, the police said.
