At a late afternoon news conference Wednesday, D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee III said a fight between the two students happened as a crowd of young people gathered in front of the school.

An off-duty D.C. police officer working inside the school noticed that students from the school were congregating in the area and then requested assistance from D.C. police, who arrived at the scene and assisted with moving the students away from the school, Contee said.

Administrators were also helping to get the students to leave when the stabbing happened in front of the school, Contee said.

The police chief said the department still does not know what the fight was about that ended with the fatal stabbing.

In 2021, Contee said the department has seen an increase in violent crime in D.C. by juveniles, including carjackings and robberies. The level of crime by juveniles is “at an unacceptable level,” he said.
