Toddler Killed In Southeast DC Shooting: Police
The Metropolitan Police Department said a small child died of a gunshot wound in Southeast D.C. Wednesday afternoon.
WASHINGTON, DC — The Metropolitan Police Department said a small child died of a gunshot wound at a condo building in Southeast D.C. Wednesday afternoon.
D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee III said the shooting occurred in the 2300 block of Chester Street SE around 12:45 p.m. Wednesday. The child was taken to a local hospital where they were later pronounced dead, he told reporters.
"We offer our deepest condolences to this family. I can't imagine what they're going through," Contee said. "We know that this child will not see Thanksgiving tomorrow."

The police said that the child may have been playing with a gun, WTOP reported.
NBC4 reported that police initially said the victim was a 1-year-old, close to 2, but later gave conflicting information on the child's age.

Contee said the police department is still gathering information about the fatal shooting and that there are several people with whom the police are talking.
