Washington, D.C. Reports 12 New Deaths From Coronavirus

WASHINGTON, DC — The D.C. Health Department reported 170 new positive cases of the coronavirus Saturday and 12 new deaths from COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, according to the District of Columbia's COVID-19 website. The number of positive coronavirus cases now stands at 6,272 and the number of deaths at 323.

In the District, the number of people tested for the coronavirus increased by 1,387 Saturday to 29,570. As of Saturday, 880 people had recovered from the disease.

In a Mother's Day message, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser tweeted: "Let's send our love to those who've lost mothers, grandmothers, and mother figures during these unprecedented times. Support a friend in need. Reach out, and let them know you're here for them. We're in this together."

African Americans continue to make up a disproportionate percentage of deaths in D.C., at 78 percent. According to the District's neighborhood-specific data, Columbia Heights has the most reported positive cases, at 347, followed by the adjacent 16th St. Heights neighborhood with 318 positive cases.

Bowser is urging residents to take advantage of the free coronavirus tests being offered to anyone with symptoms of the virus.

Drive-thru and walk-up testing is currently available at United Medical Center, 1310 Southern Ave. S.E., and UDC-CC Bertie Backus Campus, 5171 South Dakota Ave. N.E.

Hours are Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Appointments are available by calling 1-855-363-0333.
