At a news conference Wednesday scheduled about education, the governor first talked about the Inflation Reduction Act signed by Biden Tuesday that included billions for the Internal Revenue Service, including 87,000 new IRS jobs.
“By the way, what have they done. They just stuck you with 87,000 new IRS agents,” DeSantis said “And they are going after you. People say they’re going to go after billionaires.

He added: “Do you know any billionaire that doesn’t already have accountants and lawyers? of course not. They do this every day….So they’re going to go after independent contractors. They’re going to go after small business people. They’re going to go after someone that may be a driving an Uber. Or a handyman or all these things. And why would they do that? Because you’re not going be able to contend with the audit. So they’re going to crush a lot of people by doing that.”
That said, the section of the new law would boost IRS coffers by $80 billion to increase compliance with tax laws already in place, bolster staff and update technology and provide more funds for taxpayer services, according to a Phoenix story.
Still, DeSantis considered the IRS piece outrageous.
“I think it was basically just a middle finger to the American public, that this is what they think of you?” he said at the news conference.
“I think this it was horrible, what they did.”
The governor plans to counteract “a lot of bad things” that are coming out of Washington, D.C.
Meanwhile, Florida and other states will be getting benefits from the new law.
Wednesday, the White House put out “state fact sheets” to all states, outlining “how families can save on their utility bills, get tax credits for electric vehicles and energy-saving appliances, and access the economic opportunities of the clean energy future.”
