FL Teen Shoots 5-Year-Old After Argument With Child's Dad: Police

An 8-year-old child was also injured in the Putnam County shooting, according to deputies.

PUTNAM COUNTY, FL — A Florida teenager is facing multiple charges after authorities say he shot a 5-year-old after getting into an argument with the child's father, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

Jaelin Tito Hope, 17, was charged with one count of aggravated battery, three counts of aggravated assault, and one count of firing a missile into a vehicle following the shooting that happened earlier this week.

According to a news release, the shooting happened in the area of Oakcrest Drive and 5th Way. The child's father told police he thought Hope flagged him down as he was driving, so he turned around and stopped. When he approached Hope, an argument ensued and Hope pulled out a gun, authorities said.

According to deputies, the child's father said he was driving away when he heard gunshots. The child's mother also told police Hope appeared to be walking away before the shots were fired.

The victim's father drove to State Road 20 and Keuka Road where they were met by emergency personnel. The 5-year-old was taken by helicopter to a Gainesville hospital where they underwent surgery. An 8-year-old child was also injured when one of the car's windows shattered, deputies said.

According to authorities, the 5-year-old is in critical condition but is considered stable.

Hope was taken into custody by deputies the same day. He was taken to Putnam County Jail and transported to a Department of Juvenile Justice facility, deputies said.
