Ron DeSantis’ proposed property tax cuts could sharply reduce funding for services like emergency management, animal resources, and road work. Their social media posts criticizing the plan drew hundreds of mostly skeptical comments, as lawmakers prepare to debate eliminating most homestead property taxes in an upcoming special session. 
2. Scam artist arrested for attempting to steal $495k from elderly Gainesville woman, deputies say (wcjb.com) — Alachua County Sheriff’s deputies and the FBI stopped a large-scale gold scam targeting an elderly Gainesville woman, intervening before she lost nearly half a million dollars. Investigators arranged a sting at a Chevron on Archer Road, where they arrested a man who allegedly flew in from California to collect the gold and now remains jailed without bond.
3. State champions Columbia, Trenton finish on top of regional rankings (mainstreetdailynews.com) — Alachua’s Santa Fe High softball team finishes eighth in the final Prep Zone regional rankings after a strong 24-4 season and deep playoff run. The poll crowns Columbia and Trenton as top teams and highlights several other North Florida programs, including Gainesville, Branford, and Williston, wrapping up a standout year for area softball.
4. Suspect charged with petit theft after investigation into death of pet pig (alachuachronicle.com) — Alachua County Sheriff’s Office investigators say a Hawthorne resident’s pet pig, Gemma, was killed after wandering off her property, leading to a petit theft charge against a suspect. Deputies explain that animal cruelty charges were not supported because the pig was believed to be a feral hog, while offering condolences to the grieving family.
