Quick-Acting Police Chief Brings Boy Back to Life

He'd just arrived at his South Florida home when he heard screams from a neighbor.

Anyone who thinks police chiefs sit behind desks, avoiding the need to roll up their sleeves hasn’t heard about Denny Davis.

Davis, Okeechobee’s police chief, had just arrived home Tuesday when he and his wife heard a scream, WESH.com reported. Not thinking twice, Davis ran to his neighbor’s home where he found Brody McGee, 5, unconscious, in his mother’s arms.

Davis checked the child for a pulse, found none and started CPR. After minutes passed, Davis told the Okeechobee News he asked for help: “I was thinking, Lord, we need a little help here.”

Brody began to breathe and then he started to cry, the paper reported.

Davis handed him over to his mother, Jackie, just as fire rescue units arrived on the scene. Brody spent a day in the hospital, but is on the mend, both publications reported.

It seems the Jackie McGee, her two children and five others were enjoying an afternoon swim in an above-ground pool when the incident happened. Jackie was watching the children when she lost sight of Brody and then spotted him floating face-down, Wesh reported.

The McGees and Davises both live in Okeechobee’s Real Life Children’s Ranch. The Christian-based organization provides group foster home care for abused, abandoned and neglected children, according to its website. Both the Davises and McGees serve as house parents.

The afternoon swim was meant to be a reward for the children, Brent McGee, Brody’s father, told the Okeechobee News.

As for Davis, he’s not interested in recognition.

“My reward came that day when that little boy got his breath back,” he told Wesh.
