• All snapped up: Destin charter fleet kicks off red snapper season (thedestinlog.com) — Destin’s charter fleet has kicked off a 147-day red snapper season, drawing anglers from across the Southeast to local docks starting June 1. With a two-fish, 16-inch minimum per person, boats are already filling racks with snapper plus grouper, mingo, and more, giving residents and visitors plenty of options for booking trips this summer and early fall.
   

• Two Okaloosa County students win top honors in America 250 writing contest (getthecoast.com) — A Destin Middle School student, Lilly Lopez, has earned first place in a regional America 250 history writing contest, bringing recognition to both her school and the city. Her winning essay, along with the runner-up’s, will be showcased July 4 at the Heritage Museum of Northwest Florida, giving Destin families a chance to see local student work featured in a major Independence Day exhibit.
   

• Alabama family seeks justice in case against doctor accused of removing wrong organ (mypanhandle.com) — A tragic Walton County medical case has close ties to Destin, as 70-year-old Vietnam veteran Bill Bryan died after a Miramar Beach surgery while vacationing here with his wife. His family continues driving down for court hearings as the manslaughter case against Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky moves slowly forward, with a tentative trial date set but likely to change.
