Jacksonville Non-Profit Continues To Make Face Masks For The Public Amid Coronavirus Spike

Jacksonville, Florida released a new mask mandate as of June 29, 2020, at 5 p.m. This mandate requires everyone to wear a mask in indoor, public places, where social distancing is not possible.

Rethreaded, a non-profit organization based out of Jacksonville, Florida is providing cotton t-shirt masks for five dollars each. Each mask is double-layered and is cinched at the sides to adjust the size. The masks have a built-in pocket if you decide to place a filter inside. These masks are not medical grade, but are made according to the CDC guidelines for general use, such as going to the grocery store. When a mask is purchased, the funds help provide impactful work for a survivor of human trafficking in Jacksonville, Florida.

With temperatures rising across Northeast Florida, the lightweight material of the masks makes the wearing experience far more manageable than masks made from more heavyweight materials. Each mask is made from upcycled t-shirts and handcrafted by a Rethreaded employee. Everyone working in mask production is required to wear gloves and a mask while they make these products. It is of utmost importance to the organization that everything they create for the public is as safe and sanitary as possible. The organization has recently lifted the limit to mask purchases, due to the increase in the need for these masks across the community. The organization recommends cleaning these masks by washing them in a pillowcase or mesh bag, then placing them in a washing machine with a regular load of clothes. Air drying the masks is the best way to maintain the longevity of the material they are made from.
