Watch Live Eagle Cam: First Baby Eagle has Landed

Consider making a family-friendly wager with your kids on when the next eagle will arrive.

MIAMI — With another long holiday weekend upon us, many South Floridians have been spending time with their families. That means eating cookies, exchanging gifts, watching movies and maybe even witnessing the birth of two American Eagles.

The first arrived on New Year's Eve day.

"During their latest switch to incubate the eggs, Harriet & M gave us a look at the hatching egg. A bigger crack & emerging eaglet," the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam organization announced via Facebook shortly before 5 p.m. on Friday.

The Southwest Florida Eagle Cam has been trained on Harriet and M15, who have been taking turns incubating their eggs and “carefully turning and rolling them at regular intervals,” according to operators of cameras that are live streaming the births.

"We have an official "pip" or crack in one egg! The eaglet will now spend the next 24-48 hours slowly breaking out of the shell, taking breaks to gather strength and rest," the organization proclaimed on Thursday. "It won't be long until it makes an official entrance into the world."

The second big event may come at any time on New Year’s Eve or New Year's Day. Perhaps your family can make a friendly wager with a family-friendly prize of your choosing.

“They aerate the nest material by pulling it up from the bottom and turning it over. They patiently brood their eggs for hours on end and eagerly step up to take their next turn at egg tending,” according to operators. “The cycle goes on without a hitch with well-timed exchanges. Many times they pass each other with a brief vocal acknowledgement saying possibly, ‘Your turn.’ Mom and dad have each taken their turn to relax and enjoy free time to visit the pond for a bath, to soar and to perch in their favorite spots around the territory.”

Operators add that M15 has turned into a “masterful provider, nest builder and protector.”
