Goodbye Olive Tree, Deli Lane, Etrusco; Hello Red Chef, the Greek Taverna

As the busy season turns into the quiet season in Sarasota, naturally there are many changes in the restaurant business. The reality of a slower summer pace necessitates a reassessment by restaurateurs of resources and for some a closing. And yet the prospects of another approaching season are just the catalyst needed for the launch of a new venture. Just like the tides, the local economy rises and lowers with the season; this year is no different.

The Olive Tree, a newly opened (Fall 2010) Mediterranean inspired restaurant located on Main Street has closed up shop. , a downtown Italian restaurant which has served the Sarasota area for a number of years, recently and unexpectedly closed its doors. While , part of the successful Miami based restaurant group tried to make its presence felt on the west coast but was unable to do so.

, a chain of 3 restaurants with 2 locations in Sarasota and 1 in Lakewood Ranch is currently experiencing some upheaval and change. Temporarily and unexpectedly closed, the business is undergoing a management and ownership change and expects to reopen shortly. As a result, will be temporarily closing as well.

Meanwhile activity for new restaurants is robust. Last month we referenced a number of locations being renovated on Main Street for new restaurant tenants. Continuing that trend Sean Murphy (Beach Bistro, Eat Here) plans a fall opening in the former Esca space of his new Eat Here Island Bistro concept. We will cover in more detail in the Fall.

has relocated to 1481 Main Street and reopened under the new name of Patrick’s 1481.

Red Chef, a new casual family oriented and styled restaurant on the North Trail is now open for daily business. The newly opened Greek Taverna, located on the corner of Clark and Beneva, has opened its doors serving Greek cuisine in a casual styled restaurant.

While the pace of the restaurant patrons may be slower in summer, the activities for new restaurants continues at a harried pace.
