Suspect Arrested Weeks After Fatal Tampa Shooting: Police

TAMPA, FL — A 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Kevondre Thomas near West Main Street and North Albany Avenue on Father’s Day, Tampa police said in a news release.

Roosevelt Harmon was taken into custody Tuesday in Palm Beach County by the U.S. Marshalls Fugitive Task Force.

Harmon was charged with murder in the first-degree premeditated firearm and felon in possession of a firearm, police said.

The arrest followed a June 21 shooting that happened as officers were near the intersection dispersing a large gathering.

The officers heard shots fired and ran toward the gunfire, where they found an adult male in critical condition and began rendering aid.

Thomas, the 29-year-old victim, was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Investigators later found surveillance video from a nearby business that appeared to show Harmon and Thomas arguing before the shooting, with bystanders trying to separate them, police said.

During their argument, Harmon pulled out a gun and shot Thomas, who didn’t have a weapon, detectives said. A witness also identified Harmon as the shooter.

"From the moment this investigation began, detectives were committed to justice for the Thomas family," Chief Lee Bercaw said. "While no arrest can remove the pain and loss this family has endured, we hope this brings them a small amount of comfort. I want to commend the detectives for their relentless efforts to hold those responsible for this tragedy accountable."
